A few years ago I went on a very short trip to Japan. I loved it and I’ve dreamt of going back ever since. What I really like were the teeny tiny little shops. Shops that you could only find on the third floor in the very back. Shops that were so small only a few people could fit in there at a time. I love shops like that.

yokoi is located in the basement of a nondescript office building in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It is a mere 151 square feet and I love everything about it. When getting back into retro gaming I wanted to specialize. I didn’t want to be one of those people who bought everything. I have the most fond memories of the game boy so that is what I’m carrying in my store. This is a total passion project. I don’t expect to make any money off this venture and who knows if I’ll ever even have a customer but I thought it would be fun so I’m doing it.

If you haven’t figured it out already the store is named after Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the game boy. I have always been fascinated by him and his theory of lateral thinking with withered technology. I thought I would pay tribute to him in some small way by naming my store after him.
